Using the tune, Wondrous Love in the key of D Dorian

SSAATTBB arrangement by Mark Hamilton Dewey's (based on Connie Dover's)—using the tune Wondrous Love

  • PDF
  • OGG (a free format similar to MP3)
  • LilyPond
  • License: This work is based (albeit somewhat loosely) on Connie Dover's rendition of Wondrous Love. It should be fine to use this for personal, non-commercial use. Permission was granted for the contributer to post it here. For any other uses (except for the things mentioned in the sub-bullet to this), please first obtain permission from Connie Dover. Mark Hamilton Dewey wrote the parts and adapted the lyrics from several versions (including Connie Dover's); he also wrote the third verse (though it is meant to be a re-write of a popular public domain verse). Verses 1, 5, 6 and 8 are based on Connie Dover's arrangement of those lyrics. Also, the note durations of the melody are based upon Connie Dover's arrangement (although the durations in her arrangement vary slightly from verse to verse, and this arrangement only uses one of those variations).
    • The lyrics—except for those of verses 1, 5, 6 and 8—may be treated as if they were public domain. The parts written (not including the duration changes made by Connie Dover) may also be treated as if they were public domain.
  • Contributer: Veramet 21:56, 1 December 2007 (MST)—contributed by the arranger
  • Notes: This is in the key of A Mixolydian, and has nine verses (though they are on two different pages, set to the same music)
  • Critique this arrangement on Nabble.

Tune—Holy War.
P.M.
1. What wondrous love is this? O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul?
What wondrous love is this?
Which caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse,
For my soul.

2. When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down,
Beneath God's awful frown,
Christ laid aside his crown
For my soul.

3. When I began to pray for my soul, for my soul,
When I began to pray for my soul,
When I began to pray,
Thus the word of God did say,
Christ is the truth and the way,
For thy soul.

4. He shed his heavenly light in my soul, in my soul,
He shed his heavenly light in my soul,
He shed his heavenly light,
To disperse the gloom of night,
Now it shines with radiance bright,
In my soul.

230. The same continued.
1. Ye winged seraphs, fly, bear the news, bear the news,
Ye winged seraphs, fly, bear the news,
Ye winged seraphs, fly,
Like comets through the sky,
Fill vast eternity
With the news.

2. Ye friends of Zion's king, join in praise, join in praise,
Ye friends of Zion's king, join in praise;
Ye friends of Zion's king,
With hearts and voices sing,
And strike each tuneful string,
In his praise.

3. And when from death made free, we will sing, we will sing,
And when from death made free, we will sing,
And when from death made free,
We'll sing and joyful be,
Through all eternity
We will sing.

Lyrics from The Hesperian Harp, 1848, by Dr. William Hauser (no. 234)

1. What wondrous love is this,
O my soul! O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse,
For my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse, for my soul.

2. When I was sinking down,
Sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down;
When I was sinking down,
Beneath God's righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown,
For my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside his crown, for my soul.

3. Ye winged seraphs, fly!
Bear the news! bear the news!
Ye winged seraphs fly! bear the news!
Ye winged seraphs fly! bear the news,
Like comets through the sky,
Fill vast eternity
With the news, with the news,
Fill vast eternity with the news!

4. To God, and to the Lamb,
I will sing, I will sing,
To God, and to the Lamb, I will sing;
To God, and to the Lamb,
Unto the great I AM,
While millions join the theme,
I will sing, I will sing,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.

5. Come, friends of Zion's King,
Join the praise, join the praise,
Come, friends of Zion's King, join the praise!
Come, friends of Zion's King,
With hearts and voices sing,
And strike each tuneful string,
In his praise, in his praise,
And strike each tuneful string in his praise.

6. And when from death we're free,
We'll sing on, we'll sing on,
And when from death we're free, we'll sing on;
And when from death we're free,
We'll sing, and joyful be,
And through eternity
We'll sing on, we'll sing on,
And through eternity we'll sing on.

7. Yes, when to that bright world
We arise, we arise,
Yes, when to that bright world we arise—
When to that world we go,
Free from all pain and wo,
We'll join the happy throng,
And sing on, and sing on,
We'll join the happy throng, and sing on.

Lyrics from The Golden Harp, Or, Camp-meeting Hymns, Old and New, 1857

When I began to pray for my soul,
When I began to pray,

He shed his heavenly light in my soul,
He shed his heavenly light,
