Lyrics

Lyrics from An American Anthology, 1787 - 1900[2], 1900

1. There is an hour of peaceful rest
To mourning wanderers given;
There is a joy for souls distrest,
A balm for every wounded breast,
’Tis found alone in heaven.

2. There is a soft, a downy bed,
Far from these shades of even—
A couch for weary mortals spread,
Where they may rest the aching head,
And find repose, in heaven.

3. There is a home for weary souls
By sin and sorrow driven;
When tossed on life’s tempestuous shoals,
Where storms arise, and ocean rolls,
And all is drear but heaven.

4. There faith lifts up her cheerful eye,
To brighter prospects given;
And views the tempest passing by,
The evening shadows quickly fly,
And all serene in heaven.

5. There fragrant flowers immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are given;
There rays divine disperse the gloom:
Beyond the confines of the tomb
Appears the dawn of heaven.

Lyrics from Yale Book of American Verse, 1912[3]

1. There is an hour of peaceful rest
To mourning wanderers given;
There is a joy for souls distrest,
A balm for every wounded breast,
'T is found alone in heaven.

2. There is a soft, a downy bed,
Far from these shades of even—
A couch for weary mortals spread,
Where they may rest the aching head,
And find repose, in heaven.

3. There is a home for weary souls
By sin and sorrow driven;
When tossed on life's tempestuous shoals,
Where storms arise, and ocean rolls,
And all is drear but heaven.

4. There faith lifts up her cheerful eye,
To brighter prospects given;
And views the tempest passing by,
The evening shadows quickly fly,
And all serene in heaven.

5. There fragrant flowers immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are given;
There rays divine disperse the gloom:
Beyond the confines of the tomb
Appears the dawn of heaven.

Lyrics from A Collection of Sacred Hymns, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1841

Hymn 239
8s & 6s.
1. There is an hour of peaceful rest,
To mourning wanderers given:
There is a tear for souls distressed,
A balm for every wounded breast—
'Tis found alone—in heaven.

2. There is a home for weary souls,
By sins and sorrows driven;
When tossed on life's tempestuous shoals
Where storms arise—and ocean rolls,
And all is drear—but heaven.

3. There faith lifts up the tearless eye,
The heart with anguish riven;
It views the tempest passing by,
Sees evening shadows quickly fly,
And all serene—in heaven.

4. There fragrant flowers immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are given;
There rays divine disperse the gloom;
Beyond the dark and narrow tomb
Appears the dawn—of heaven.

Lyrics from A Collection of Sacred Hymns for the Use of the Latter Day Saints, 1844

1. There is an hour of peaceful rest,
To mourning wand'rers giv'n:
There is a tear for souls distressed,
A balm for ev'ry wounded breast -
'Tis found alone - in heav'n.

2. There is a home for weary souls,
By sins and sorrows driv'n;
When tossed on life's tempestuous shoals,
Where storms arise - and ocean rolls,
And all is drear - but heav'n.

3. There faith lifts up the tearless eye,
The heart with anguish riv'n;
It views the tempest passing by,
Sees ev'ning shadows quickly fly,
And all serene - in heav'n.

4. There fragrant flow'rs immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are giv'n;
There rays divine disperse the gloom;
Beyond the dark and narrow tomb,
Appears the dawn - of heav'n.
