Lyrics source for Be Still My Soul

Where did you get the lyrics you put up? (i.e. publication name and date, as well as page and/or hymn number) We need it under a heading there so as to differentiate from other publications of the same version (even if the differences are slight, there often are differences), and for documentation purposes—not to mention it should serve as proof that it is really public domain. If the source is just the Cyberhymnal or something, we still need to cite it as coming from there. I can tell it's not from there, though. —Veramet 09:50, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Hymns Old & New Anglican Edition Published 1986 gives the lyrics by Katharina von Schlegel (b. 1697) translated by J.L. Borthwick who's dates I have established were (1813-1897). This means unless Katharina is still alive (v. unlikely at 312) and claims the copyright for the translation (which would not be hers), it expired in 1947 which establishes it in the Public Domain - see http://www.hymnswithoutwords.com/hymns/Be_still,_my_soul. By the way, the copyright on the Tune "Finlandia" expired in 2007 (50 years from his death) and is also now in the Public Domain, although some publishers might want to retain copyright on a particular arrangement. Lorddunvegan 10:05, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

In the United States I believe it expired long before that. It is worth noting that the tune is still under copyright in Europe. See here for more information.

The UK only has 50 years for copyright. Recent moves to update this to 70 years were roundly criticised by musicians. Lorddunvegan 09:22, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
