Joseph the Hymnographer

Joseph the Hymnographer was a prolific ninth-century (d. 883) Greek-language hymnist. Born in Sicily, lived as an adult in Thessalonica, Rome, Crete (reputedly as a slave of pirates), and Constantinople. He was an activist on the side of icons during the iconoclast controversy, which led to his fleeing Constantinople, temporarily, for Rome. He is thought to have written perhaps as many as a thousand hymns.
