From HymnWiki
A canticle (from the Latin for "little song; songlet; ditty") is, in church usage, a song lyric of scriptural origin that is not one of the Psalms. It may be read (simply or responsively) as a poem, chanted, or recast in metrical form and sung. Among the Biblical canticles are:

- Song of Deborah
- Song of the Three Young Men
- Song of Solomon
- Magnificat (Song of Mary)
- Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon)
