Life

  • 1833 - 1896

William Gould Tomer, the author of the music, is of German ancestry. He has been a school teacher, a soldier in the [American] Civil War, and a clerk in the Treasury Department.

  • God Be with You (used with God Be with You Till We Meet Again) Mr. Tomer was was music director at the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, DC., in 1882 when he wrote the music to "God Be With You" at the request of Dr. J. R. Rankin.
