Hymn

General information

A hymn is a song. Generally sung in a religious, or spiritual atmosphere, such as a church, hymns are meant to increase the spiritual feelings and awareness of a meeting.

The term hymn hymn may also refer to songs that are not typically thought of as hymns. HymnWiki is able to accommodate these: primary songs (AKA Children's Songs), religious music with the same intent as hymns, traditional/folk music related to hymns or religious compilations, and such. (Some of this may be widely different from what we know as hymns, but is nevertheless acceptable here; most of this is not public domain and thus one should first obtain the rights to upload sheet music for it before so doing.)

Some compilations for youth groups often contain folk tunes; these are acceptable here, so long as the information on the religious compilation is included. These, however, should not go under the hymns category; they should go under the folk tunes category. Similarly, primary songs should go under the category called Children's Songs; some of these may be considered hymns, as well, and go under that category - though the poet/composer should still go under the hymnists category.

Uses of hymns

• Hymns also serve a variety of other purposes. For example, if someone cuts you off on the freeway and you really want to do something hasty in return, you could use the upbeat, snappy tune Hum Your Favorite Hymn. When feeling down, depressed and completely bummed out by your lack of worldly possessions, simply sing Count Your Blessings to yourself, and instantly you will feel better! Of course, there are other times when a hymn might be appropriate. If, for some reason, you happen to be caught in a violent storm (not necessarily a physical storm), remembering the lyrics to Master, the Tempest is Raging may prove soothing. Maybe not too, but at least you will know that you are able to recollect the hymn.
