History
Traditionally, in the early days of hymns, lyrics and tunes were separate. One would pick a set of lyrics and pick a tune to match its poetic meter. Today, however, each set of lyrics is usually sung to a certain tune (sometimes more than one, but still a rather small amount of tunes).
